Cyprus is the third largest Mediterranean island and attracts as many as 2 million tourists every year and half of these are British people who choose it as their holiday destination. It is a haven of sun, sea and sand, and the island boasts some of the cleanest beaches in Europe. Due to its EU membership, strong currency and low-cost, high-quality standard of living, Cyprus is also a popular location for the British to purchase a holiday home, or retire to and set up a permanent base here. And, although learning the language will help you settle more quickly, the good news is that it is easy to find your way about in Cyprus as English is widely spoken.
Cyprus has many interesting features in its landscape. The Troodos Mountains cover approximately half of the island in the South and West regions, and the Kyrenia Mountain Range extends along the northern coastline, covering a much smaller area. Coastal lowlands surround the island offering miles and miles of beautiful, pristine sandy beaches and secluded bays to explore.
The capital of Cyprus is Nicosia. It is located on the River Pedieos and is situated almost in the centre of the island. It is the world's last divided capital and is split in two by the 'Green Line' - a United Nations buffer zone that divides the Greek Cypriot community in the south from the Turkish Cypriot community in the north. Nicosia has many shops, two modern shopping centres, restaurants, bars and night clubs. The old city is the place to head for museums and tourist attractions, such as the Cyprus Museum (also known as the Cyprus Archaeological Museum) and the Byzantine Museum, which has one of the best collections of Orthodox icons in the world. In addition to this, the city is also Cyprus's main business centre and financial capital and is known for the manufacture of textiles, leather, pottery and plastic.
