Copenhagen

The country’s capital, which straddles the coastal islands of Zealand and Amager, was ranked the Best City for Working Abroad in a 2024 InterNations survey. This top position takes into account not just salaries and job security, but also time spent away from work.

The survey concluded that employees in the city enjoyed an excellent work/life balance, with many companies offering flexible hours and the possibility of working from home. Finance, technology and the creative arts are Copenhagen’s growth sectors when it comes to finding a job.

However, partly because it’s such a tourist hotspot (it’s the home of the Tivoli Gardens, the Little Mermaid statue, pictured above, and many museums and historic buildings), it can be more expensive than other Danish cities. You can, though, cut down on some of your travelling costs by using the excellent public transport system – and Copenhagen is one of the most bike-friendly cities in the world.

Aarhus

The country’s second largest city (after Copenhagen) is situated on the Jutland peninsula’s east coast. Aarhus is particularly popular with students and young professionals. Its university is the oldest in the country, is internationally recognised, and is home to more than 32,000 students. Many young people go on to find jobs in the education, research and technology sectors locally.

You may need some Danish language qualifications depending on the level and nature of the course – however many international schools offer tuition in the language (and most Danes are proficient in English as well).

Other attractions of Aarhus include the lower cost of living (compared to Copenhagen), although the huge student population has created pressure on the rental market There are also a variety of museums catering for all interests as well as Tivoli Friheden, a central park with plenty of amusements and rides for the children, rather like its namesake in Copenhagen.

Odense

This is a great place to live if you have children – and not just because it was the childhood home of Hans Christian Andersen. You can visit his home, and a relatively new museum dedicated to the renowned author of fairytales, but there’s plenty of other things to do as well.  Odense Zoo has more than 100 species of animals from around the world, plenty of parks and green spaces (including a dedicated trampoline park).

The pace of life is generally thought to be a bit slower than it is in Aarhus or Copenhagen. it’s the country’s third largest city in the country after these two, and less of a draw for tourists and students. In terms of jobs, the service sector has outgrown manufacturing; the city’s central location in the country means it’s an ideal base for conferences and conventions.

Aalborg

Denmark’s fourth largest city is in North Jutland on the Danish mainland. It used to be a place dominated by heavy industry, and it was a big net exporter of products as diverse as grain, cement and spirits. These days, however, renewable energy and telecoms are the driving forces behind the city’s economy

It’s a good place to move to if you like your art and culture – apart from the museums and performance venues, Aalborg’s annual carnival at the end of May attracts more than 100,000 visitors and is one of the biggest events not just in Denmark but in the whole of Northern Europe. It’s split into a junior event, a bands contest and the main grand parade.
