Popular Countries to Move to By Search Terms

Google searches have shown that certain key phrases have become extremely popular in the past few months. Thanks to coronavirus lockdowns, ‘indoor workouts’ and ‘baking soda bread’ are among the most searched-for pages across the world; so too, however, was the idea of moving abroad. Here The Moving Partnership look at the data – which was compiled by a leading financial exchange group for the year 2020 – in more detail.

Canada

If you are thinking about international removals to Canada, then you aren’t the only one. It was the favoured destination for 30 other countries across the world, making it the most searched-for country. Low unemployment rates and stunning scenery (above) are thought to have played a part; and for English and French speakers there is no language barrier either, as many Canadians are fluent in one or both tongues.

Japan

Japan is second in the overall rankings – attracting searches from across several different continents. It was the most popular search in several south-east Asian countries, the USA, Canada and Australia.

Spain

This was another popular country, but not within Europe. Most of the searches here came from Latin American countries due to the similarities in languages and culture. Healthcare, general safety levels and the overall lifestyle were also factors in pushing it up to third place overall, behind Canada and Japan. (Portugal was another popular search term among Latin Americans for the same reasons).

Germany

Among European searchers, Germany was the top pick. Its excellent universal healthcare system, a thriving economy, fantastic public transport, low crime rates, clean environment and excellent job opportunities were all believed to be factors in its fourth place in the rankings.

Qatar

Many of the Middle Eastern and Arabic countries (including Jordan and Lebanon) who were looking for a new home searched for Qatar. The high salaries and low tax levels, as well as all the modern creature comforts in one of the fastest growing countries in the world, helped push it up to fifth place in the rankings.

United Kingdom

The UK just made the top ten of places to move to. It scored consistently well around the world, although only two countries – Japan and St Lucia – made it their number one choice.

  • The research was carried out by the Remitly group, who looked at global search data from Google to find where is most popular with the inhabitants of each country. They worked out the top 10 by ranking average monthly search volume for phrases commonly associated with researching a move abroad, with the most searched for location within every country topping their specific rankings.
