Five Reasons to Move to South Africa

South Africa is one of the most popular places to move to, particularly among the British. There are believed to be more than 200,000 UK nationals now living in the country – but why? The Moving Partnership, who can help with international removals to South Africa, identify five key reasons why.

There’s no Language Barrier

If you are moving from the UK, or another English-speaking country, to South Africa, then you should have no problem settling in. English is only one of the country’s 11 official languages, but it is arguably the one which is the most widely used. Most of the country’s ‘official’ communication – in businesses, shops, restaurants and tourist attractions – takes place in English.

The Low Cost of Living

If you are moving from the UK to South Africa, you’ll be pleasantly surprised at how relatively inexpensive everything is. Transport, food (including eating out) and housing costs – particularly rent – are all noticeably cheaper. A survey by global database Numbeo in 2019 found that average consumer prices in Johannesburg and Cape Town were more than 40% cheaper than in London.

The Natural Advantages…

There are plenty of national game parks around the country where you can see what South Africa has to offer in terms of wildlife. Kruger is probably the most famous park, with big cats (lions, cheetahs, leopards), really big mammals (elephants, rhinoceroses and giraffes) antelopes, hyenas, and birds. In short, everything you would associate with Africa you can find in its 7,500 square miles.

South Africa also boasts a wide mix of mountain ranges (the Drakensberg is probably the most striking), rolling hills, river canyons, and deserts, so you are spoilt for choice if you like spectacular scenery. And, across the country there are 22,000 indigenous plants from 230 different families – around 10% of the world’s flowering species.

It’s not confined to rural areas either. If you are thinking of removals from the UK to Cape Town, then the city was named the Best City to Visit in the 2017 Telegraph Travel Awards – thanks in part to its coastal location and Table Mountain (which overlooks the city and is pictured above).

…and the Weather

Those who like the sun need look no further than South Africa – there are clear blue skies and plenty of sunshine virtually all the year round. Temperatures can exceed 100F, but more generally tend to hover around the 75-80F mark. If there is summer rain, then it tends to be short and sharp.

This means it’s also the ideal place for those who like an outdoor lifestyle, and plenty of sport to go with it. Cricket, rugby and football are followed passionately across the country, while cycling and running are popular too. South Africa’s vast coastline means watersports have plenty of devotees as well.

The Excellent Healthcare

This is renowned for its quality around the world. Many come to South Africa for operations which they can’t get in their home country – and end up staying on afterwards. The one disadvantage is that it’s not free – everyone is expected to pay. However, the fees are based on your income, so it should be affordable.
