About the Netherlands – The Hague

With its impressive buildings and 18th century classical mansions, The Hague is a glamorous place to live with fashionable shops, fine dining, numerous recreational areas, and an appealing coastline.  A number of foreign embassies and as many as 150 multinational organisations are based here and it is also the regional headquarters of major companies such as T-Mobile, Huawei and Siemens. 

With more than a million people living in the metropolitan area, The Hague is the 3rd largest city in Holland. It has much more of a continental feel than you get with other Dutch cities, and if you are moving from the UK to the Netherlands, there are plenty of wonders to discover from lively café bars and night clubs, live music venues, expensive boutiques, wide open spaces and fascinating museums and art galleries. 

If you are moving to The Hague, the city’s airport serves The Hague and Rotterdam, although travellers also use Amsterdam Airport to get in and out of the city. In addition, the city’s two railway stations, Den Haag Centraal and Den Haag HS, provide rail services to a number of domestic and European cities.

History and Attractions

The Hague was founded in the 13th century when an aristocrat bought land near a pond to build a hunting lodge, which was later extended into a palace which is still used today for high profile, political events.  A village sprang up around the palace and this was eventually extended as the population grew, although The Hague didn’t receive city status until the early 19th century.

The city suffered extensive damage in bombing raids in the Second World War and at one point it was regarded as the largest building site in Europe. As the city was being rebuilt, the population boomed and prosperous middle class suburbs were established. Fast forward to the present day and The Hague still remains an important city and is the seat of the government and parliament.

The Hague is also a prime tourist destination welcoming about 600,000 tourists a year from abroad. Head to the elegant Plein (or square) next to the Binnenhof to see some excellent examples of fine architecture or relax in one of the many café bars in the area frequented by politicians. If you are an art lover the Royal Picture Gallery Mauritshuis has an excellent collection including world-famous masterpieces such as the Girl with a Pearl Earring by Vermeer.  

If you are moving to The Netherlands with children Museon, an interactive science museum, is a hugely popular with families. Another must visit is the fashionable beach resort of Scheveningen, which hosts various festivals including the sand sculpture festival in May and the fireworks festival in August. 

Food and Dining in The Hague

If you are dining out in The Hague, you will find an excellent selection of Oriental restaurants including Indonesian, Chinese and Japanese fusion restaurants. Worth a visit is also the famous Haagsche brood- en banketbakkerij Hans en Frans, which serves chocolate and a sweet bread with dried fruit and nuts.

Transport in The Hague

The Hague has an excellent public transport system consisting of buses, trams and light rail. To use public transport you will need to buy a ticket in advance and smartcard tickets are available from the main station. Other ways to get about is by foot and by bike, and if you don’t have your own bicycle, you can get some quite good deals on second hand bikes in Holland.
